Overview of the Ministry

  • Electric power is the cornerstone of all economic and social development plans of any society for that on which all industrial, agricultural and tourism projects are built, as well as the development and sustainability of new urban communities and agricultural reclamation areas; besides, being directly linked to everyday life of all people in their domestic uses and lighting.
  • The first independent Ministry of Electricity was established by Presidential Decree No. 147 of 1964, subsequent by several amended resolutions, the latest of which was the Presidential Decree No. 1103 of 1974 regulating the Ministry of Electricity. On July 7, 2015, the Presidential Decree was issued by Law No. 78 of 2015, issuing the new Electricity Law.
  • The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, in accordance with the new Electricity Law, aims to formulate policies for the electricity sector to implement the electric power strategy, including plans and programs related to the appropriate institutional framework. Along with securing the supply of electricity, encouraging investment, research, and development, raising efficiency, protecting competition, preserving the environment, and strengthening cooperation with other countries in the field of electricity.
  • The Ministry, in coordination with the competent authorities, shall prepare a retrospective plan for the operation and provision of electricity needs during natural and environmental disasters or cases of public mobilization, provided that the plan shall be updated whenever necessary.
  • The Ministry, in coordination with the Electricity Utility and Consumer Protection Regulatory Authority and the concerned authorities, shall prepare a study on the development of the electricity market to become a competitive market while raising the efficiency of performance through fair competition, attracting investments in the field of electricity production and gradually opening the market to competition on stages. Along with maintaining the efficiency of the electrical system.
